History of the labels


The official recognition of Normandy cider appellations took place from 1942 onwards :

1942 : A decree brought in following liberation, introduced

 
The Calvados d'appellation contrôlée (controlled origin Calvados varieties), which had to be derived from the distillation of a cider produced from apples from the orchards of the Pays d'Auge using an still.

The Calvados d'appellation d'origine réglementée (regulated controlled origin Calvados varieties), for the orchards of other regions of Normandy, including Domfront and its area, the Orne valley and the Risle and Bray areas, etc.
The Eaux de vie de cidre réglementée (regulated controlled origin cider brandies).
 

1984 : Simplification of the various appellations

The various Calvados appellations previously referred to as "regulated" were now included in the Calvados d'appellation contrôlée label, with a single distillation using the "continuous jet" method.
This was the official "birth" of the Calvados d'appellation contrôlée Pays d'Auge (the controlled origin Calvados variety for the Pays d'Auge) which replaced the "Calvados d'appellation contrôlée". This now unanimously became established as the "king" of Calvados
varieties. In addition to its geographical origin, (strictly limited to the Pays d'Auge as you would imagine), the production processes were also rigorously determined and verified, in particular the double distillation.


1991 :
Recognition of the Pommeau de Normandie


A harmonious mixture of apple must and Calvados, Pommeau de Normandie has been produced for centuries by Norman farmers. For various reasons, its widespread marketing has been forbidden. Fortunately, this ban was lifted and since 1991, Pommeau
de Normandie has been recognised with its very own Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (label guaranteeing the origin and quality of the drink).


1996 : Recognition of the Appellation Cidre du Pays d'Auge Contrôlée (controlled origin cider from the Pays d'Auge)

In order to clearly distinguish their products from those of the "industrial" cider makers, the producers of the Pays d'Auge obtained the Appellation Pays d'Auge Contrôlée status for their cider: the specifications cover the type of apples used and the area
concerned (therefore establishing a precise geographical origin), as well as the production process used, which must be traditional.
 
   
 

1997 : An appellation for the Domfront Calvados

This special Calvados, produced in the Canton of Domfront in the Bocage Ornais is unique in that it comprises at least 30% perry pears.

 
 
Unlike certain spirits for which the origin of the raw material is determined by its price, brandy bearing the Appellation Calvados Pays d'Auge Contrôlée label is produced only from apples grown in the Pays d'Auge and nowhere else. This is one of the conditions for its authorisation. This also contributes significantly to its excellence, since the reputation for quality enjoyed by Auge apples is second to none and the small size of the coverage area is constantly checked, enhancing the rarity factor.

In addition to this, the production of cider and the double distillation must be carried out within the geographical boundaries of the Auge region in order to be covered by the appellation d'origine contrôlée or "AOC".
